Credit Card Mail Fraud

THERE has been an alarming increase in the number of credit cards stolen from mailboxes in Wollongong in the past six months.

Police say the number of thefts has doubled and they partly attribute it to bank policies.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Ainsworth said banks were still sending out card renewals in the mail, which made it easy for thieves.

He said Wollongong detectives had already investigated more than 100 cases of credit card fraud involving mail-outs this year.

"The cards were stolen and the thieves ring the owner pretending to be the bank, or if that fails they contact the bank pretending to be the owner," Snr Sgt Ainsworth said.
