JAMES Pedersen has a wallet brimming with cards but that didn't stop him from joining a novel loyalty club which helps save people's lives.

The Mangerton chef has become one of Wollongong Blood Bank's frequent donors in a new scheme to encourage people to donate more often.

"We have discovered that people on average only donate whole blood twice a year, when the maximum is four," a blood bank spokesperson said.

Plasma donations can be made 24 times a year.

"This is a scheme which doesn't offer a lot in prizes but it raises awareness."

Mr Pedersen, 20, thinks it is a good idea.

"The card is visible in my wallet so it is a constant reminder. I used to visit the blood bank with my dad as a kid, just for the cookie, but up until now I've been too squeamish about needles to return."

It was not until a friend's daughter contracted leukaemia that he overcame his fear "because it is the right thing to do".
